Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

Adrian left the bedroom, stepping out into the corridor where Marcus stood guard.

"Keep two men on this door," Adrian commanded softly. "If anyone—and I mean anyone—attempts to enter this room without my direct command, put a bullet through them."

"Understood, boss," Marcus replied.

Adrian walked down the grand staircase into the formal parlor. The room was tense. Margaret sat on the silk sofa, sipping tea as if she were hosting an afternoon social, though two armed guards stood at the doors. Ethan was pacing nervously near the fireplace, while Lauren sat in an armchair, staring at her hands, her shoulders trembling slightly.

When Adrian walked in, the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

He didn't say a word. He walked straight past his mother and brother, stopping right in front of Lauren.

"Lauren," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Lauren jumped, looking up with wide, terrified eyes. "Adrian... I... I didn't know anything about this, I swear—"

"You snatched the silver box from my daughter’s hands the moment you saw it," Adrian noted, leaning down until he was at eye level with her. "You weren't surprised to see it. You were terrified. Why?"

"She’s just nervous, Adrian!" Ethan interjected, stepping forward. "You’ve turned this place into a prison—"

Adrian spun around, his hand snaking out like a striking viper, catching Ethan by the throat and slamming him violently against the brick fireplace!

THUD!

"Adrian!" Margaret gasped, standing up, her teacup rattling against the saucer.

"Shut up, Ethan," Adrian growled, his knuckles turning white as he pinned his younger brother to the wall. "You’ve lived off my sweat and blood your entire life. You drive my cars, you spend my money, and you drink my wine. If I find out you had a hand in putting my wife in the ground and my daughters in the dirt, I will bleed you dry myself."

Ethan choked, grabbing at Adrian’s wrist. "I... I don't... know... anything!"

Adrian threw Ethan to the floor like a rag doll. Ethan collapsed, coughing wildly, clutching his throat.

Adrian turned back to Lauren. "Last chance, Lauren. My mother will sacrifice you in a heartbeat to save herself. You know it. I know it. Tell me what happened two years ago, or I hand you over to Marcus for interrogation."

Lauren broke. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she sank to her knees on the rug.

"It was Margaret!" Lauren sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at the older woman. "It was all Margaret! She found out Claire was going to the federal prosecutor! Claire found the offshore ledger—the ones showing Margaret was selling Vale syndicate firearms to the Russian outfits without board approval!"

Margaret’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled red. "You foolish, pathetic girl! Keep your mouth shut!"

"She tried to kill her!" Lauren shrieked, ignoring Margaret entirely. "Margaret hired a crew to sabotage Claire’s brakes on the mountain road! But Claire survived the drop into the river! Margaret’s men searched the water, but they couldn't find the body. They told Adrian she was dead so he wouldn't search the valley!"

Adrian felt the world tilt around him. The air became thick, heavy, suffocating.

He turned slowly to look at his mother.

"You tried to murder my wife," Adrian said. It wasn't a question. It was a terrifying statement of fact.

"She was a liability!" Margaret shrieked, her aristocratic mask shattering completely, exposing the ruthless monster beneath. "She was going to destroy forty years of Vale supremacy! She was a weak, ordinary woman who didn't belong in this family! I did what had to be done to protect the empire!"

"And my daughters?" Adrian whispered, his eyes dark with a murderous fury. "Did you order them killed too?"

"I didn't know she was pregnant!" Margaret yelled, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "If I had known she survived, I would have finished the job two years ago!"

Adrian pulled a heavy black pistol from his waistband, pulling the slide back with a lethal CLACK-CLACK.

He pointed the barrel directly between his mother’s eyes.
