Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Adrian dropped to his knees, his heavy arms wrapping around Claire, pulling her frail body tightly against his chest.

"Claire... oh God, Claire," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with unfiltered emotion as he buried his face in her dark hair, smelling the faint, unmistakable scent of cedar and lavender beneath the smell of iron and grease.

"Adrian... you found me," Claire wept, clutching at his tactical vest with trembling, weak hands. "The girls... are the girls safe? Did Helen bring them to you?"

"They are safe, my love," Adrian promised, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her bleeding brow. "They’re at the lake house. They’re warm, they’re fed, and they’re waiting for their mother."

Claire let out a long, ragged sob of pure relief, resting her head against his shoulder as Marcus Vance rushed forward with wire cutters to snip the heavy plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.

"We need to move, boss!" Marcus urged, checking Claire’s vital signs. "She’s dehydrated and running a fever. We need to get her to the medical bay immediately!"

Adrian lifted Claire effortlessly into his arms, carrying her out of the ruined ironworks facility toward the waiting armored SUV.

An hour later, the convoy pulled back into the gated driveway of the Lake Geneva estate.

The rain had begun to taper off into a soft mist. The house was blazing with light, guarded by dozens of heavily armed Vale enforcers.

Adrian carried Claire up the grand staircase directly to the master suite.

The moment he pushed open the door, two small figures scrambled out of the bed.

"Mommy!" Ivy screamed.

"Mommy!" Skye echoed.

Claire gasped, slipping out of Adrian’s arms, falling to her knees on the soft Persian rug as her two little girls threw themselves into her open arms.

The three of them collapsed into a tangled heap of tears, kisses, and desperate embraces.

"My sweet babies... my brave little girls," Claire sobbed, pressing her face into their hair, kissing their eyes, holding them as if she would never let go again. "I’m so sorry... I’m so sorry I had to leave you..."

"Daddy brought you back!" Skye cheered, hugging Claire’s neck tightly. "He killed the dark monsters!"

Ivy reached into Adrian’s hand, took the silver pendant, and leaned forward to clip it around Claire’s neck.

"It keeps the dark away," Ivy murmured softly.

Adrian stood near the doorway, watching his wife and daughters holding each other in the warm light of the room. The hollow void that had lived inside his chest for two long years was finally filled, replaced by a fierce, burning protectiveness that would never dim again.
