Chapter 5 - The Trail of Lavender

"Adrian, no!" Ethan screamed from the floor, scrambling backward. "Don't do it! It’s our mother!"
The room was deathly quiet. Margaret stood frozen beneath the barrel of the gun. For the first time in her life, true, unadulterated terror shone in her sharp eyes. She looked at her eldest son and saw no mercy, no familial duty, no warmth—only a lethal force waiting to pull the trigger.
Slowly, Adrian lowered the gun.
"Shooting you here is too easy, Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You loved the Vale empire more than your own blood. So I am going to take it away from you. Every dollar. Every territory. Every piece of respect you spent a lifetime building."
He turned to Marcus. "Take Margaret and Ethan. Lock them in the basement vault beneath the boathouse. Strip them of their phones, their jewelry, and their credentials. If either of them attempts to leave, shoot them in the legs."
"No! You can’t do this to me!" Margaret shrieked as two heavy enforcers grabbed her arms, dragging her toward the back exit. "I am Margaret Vale! I built this family!"
"You destroyed it," Adrian said coldly.
He turned his attention back to Lauren, who was still weeping on the floor.
"Who was 'Mommy Helen'?" Adrian demanded. "Ivy mentioned a woman named Helen who brought them here."
Lauren wiped her nose with a trembling hand. "Helen... Helen Vance. She was... she was a nurse at the private syndicate clinic. She was Dr. Vance’s sister. She disappeared the same night Claire went off the mountain."
Adrian turned his head sharply toward Dr. Marcus Vance, who was standing quietly near the doorway.
Marcus met Adrian’s glare without flinching, though his face was pale.
"You knew?" Adrian asked, his voice dripping with danger.
"I didn't know Claire was alive until three weeks ago, Adrian," Marcus said quietly, raising his hands in surrender. "Helen called me from a burner phone. She told me she had dragged Claire out of the river two years ago and kept her hidden in an old logging cabin near the upper ridge. Helen knew if Margaret found out Claire lived, Margaret would send a cleanup squad to finish them both."
"Where is the cabin, Marcus?" Adrian demanded, stepping forward and seizing the doctor by his lapels. "Where is my wife?"
"I’ll take you there," Marcus said firmly. "But you need to move fast, Adrian. Helen called me forty-eight hours ago. She said Margaret’s private security chief, Viktor Rostov, found their location. Helen managed to get the girls out, but Claire stayed behind to draw Rostov’s men away from the children."

Adrian’s grip tightened on the doctor’s jacket. "Rostov has her?"
"If she’s still alive," Marcus whispered, "she doesn't have much time."
