Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Broken

Three days later.
The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, turning the surface of Lake Geneva into a shimmering blanket of silver and gold.
In the formal dining room of the estate, the long mahogany table was filled with plates of pancakes, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, and hot cocoa.
Skye sat on a high chair, happily smearing strawberry jam over a piece of toast, while Ivy sat beside Adrian, carefully cutting her pancake into tiny, neat squares just like her father did.
Claire sat at the head of the table, dressed in a warm cream cashmere sweater, her hair washed and styled, her face filled with returning health and radiant beauty. Her hand rested comfortably in Adrian’s on the table.
The double doors of the dining room opened.
Marcus Vance walked in, carrying a leather briefcase. "Adrian. The tribunal has gathered in the lower conference room. The syndicate leaders from all five territories are present."
Claire’s eyes flicked to Adrian. "Is it time?"
Adrian stood up, kissing the top of Claire’s head, then bending down to squeeze Ivy and Skye’s small shoulders. "Eat your breakfast, girls. Daddy has some business to finish."
Downstairs in the heavily fortified subterranean conference room, twelve senior syndicate captains sat around a black glass table.
At the far end of the room stood Margaret and Ethan, guarded by two armed men. Margaret looked disheveled, her expensive clothes wrinkled, her eyes hollow with defeat, while Ethan stared nervously at the floor.
When Adrian entered the room, every captain stood up instantly, bowing their heads in deep respect.
Adrian walked to the head of the table, taking his seat.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Adrian announced, his voice echoing with absolute, unquestioned authority, "Margaret Vale and Ethan Vale have been stripped of all executive titles, financial holdings, and syndicate privileges."
Margaret stepped forward, her voice trembling with desperation. "Adrian! You cannot banish your own mother! The family code—"
"The family code states that anyone who attempts to murder the wife and children of the Don shall be executed," Adrian interrupted coldly.
Margaret went deadly silent.
"However," Adrian continued, looking around the room at the seated captains. "My wife has asked for mercy. Therefore, you will not be executed. You and Ethan will be permanently exiled to a secured estate in northern Alaska. You will have no access to phones, internet, or visitors. You will spend the remainder of your lives in total isolation, watching the frozen tundra."
"Alaska?!" Ethan cried out in terror. "Adrian, please! You can’t lock us away in the wilderness!"
"Take them away," Adrian commanded.
Four guards stepped forward, grabbing Margaret and Ethan, dragging them out of the room as their cries echoed down the concrete hallway until the heavy iron doors swung shut, sealing them away forever.
Adrian looked at the remaining syndicate leaders. "The Vale family is under new management. From this day forward, we do not deal in poison, we do not deal in human trafficking, and we do not betray our own blood. Anyone who dissents may leave their ring on this table and walk out right now."
Not a single captain moved. They all bowed their heads.

"Long live the Don," Marcus Vance declared firmly.
"Long live the Don," the captains repeated in unison.
