Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Dock

The storm fully broke over Lake Geneva by 9:00 PM. Torrential rain lashed against the windows, and thunder rumbled across the dark hills.

Adrian stood in the armory beneath the Lake Geneva house, strapping a heavy tactical vest across his chest and loading double-stack magazines into his belt holsters. Beside him, Marcus Vance was equipping a medical field kit, while four of Adrian’s most elite tactical operators checked their automatic rifles.

Before heading out, Adrian walked back upstairs to the master bedroom.

The two little girls were sitting up in bed, wrapped in warm blankets, watching the door. When Adrian walked in, Ivy immediately reached out her arms.

Adrian knelt beside the bed, pulling both daughters into a tight, warm embrace. He smelled the soft scent of baby powder and lavender soap on their skin.

"Where are you going?" Skye asked, her large gray-blue eyes wide with worry.

"I’m going to go bring your Mommy home," Adrian said softly, kissing Skye’s forehead, then Ivy’s.

Ivy looked into his eyes with a wisdom far beyond her three years. She reached under her pillow, pulled out the silver pendant engraved with the letter 'C', and pressed it into Adrian’s palm.

"Give it back to Mommy," Ivy whispered. "She said it keeps the dark away."

Adrian closed his fingers around the cold silver metal. "I will. I promise."

He stood up, looking at the security team leader standing in the doorway. "If anything happens to this house while I’m gone, tear the state apart. Protect my girls."

"With our lives, boss," the captain swore.

Ten minutes later, two black armored SUVs sped away from the Lake Geneva compound, cutting through the heavy rain toward the dense pine forests of the upper ridge.

Inside the lead vehicle, Adrian sat in the front passenger seat, staring into the dark woods illuminated by the headlights. His satellite phone buzzed in his lap.

He picked it up. It was a secure line from his intelligence operative in Midtown.

"Boss," the voice on the phone reported. "We traced the heavy transport vehicle registered to Viktor Rostov. It cleared the highway toll three hours ago heading toward the abandoned ironworks facility near the old quarry."

"Is Rostov operating on Margaret’s orders?" Adrian asked, his voice low and deadly.

"He was, until three hours ago when we froze Margaret’s accounts," the operative replied. "Now Rostov is acting independently. Word on the street is he’s trying to sell Claire to the Moretti cartel as collateral to settle his own debts before he flees the country."

Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.

"Tell the perimeter team to surround the ironworks," Adrian commanded. "No one leaves that facility alive."
