Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

Chief Miller’s face flushed red with anger. "Ramirez? What the hell are you doing here? This is my county!"

"It was your county until two hours ago," Agent Ramirez replied smoothly, stepping into the center of the driveway. "At 4:00 AM, my office received a digital file containing 4K security footage, complete with high-fidelity audio, from this garage. It details Mr. Arthur Vance making explicit verbal threats to murder an animal and inflict severe physical harm on a seven-year-old child."

Arthur’s face paled. "That... that video is a deepfake! A fabrication made by criminals!"

"We also received a certified forensic medical report from a licensed physician detailing thumb-print contusions on the child's arms consistent with felony child abuse," Ramirez continued, pulling a tablet from her folder. "Along with veterinary X-rays of a puppy suffering from blunt-force trauma."

"I am a major donor to the Governor's office!" Arthur yelled, his composure slipping completely. "You can't do this!"

"Mr. Vance," Agent Ramirez said coldly, "you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you."

"Wait!" Miller interjected, stepping between Ramirez and Vance. "Agent Ramirez, you can't just arrest a respected business leader based on claims made by an outlaw motorcycle club! I demand that the girl be turned over to social services immediately!"

At that moment, the garage doors swung fully open.

Mia walked out slowly, wrapped in her small jacket. She wasn't hiding anymore. Held firmly in her arms was Buster, his leg cleanly wrapped in a bright blue cast.

Beside her, Goliath moved like a silent guardian shadow.

When Chief Miller took a sudden step toward Mia, Goliath placed himself in front of the child and let out a single, deep, chest-vibrating growl that echoed off the metal walls. It wasn't a bark—it was a promise.

Chief Miller froze in his tracks.

Mia looked up at Agent Ramirez, then down at Goliath. She reached out her tiny hand and gently pressed it against Ramirez’s arm.

"Please don't let Arthur take me back," Mia said softly, her eyes clear and brave. "He hurt my mommy. She's trapped in the house."

Agent Ramirez’s expression softened instantly. She looked at Arthur Vance, then at Chief Miller.

"Chief," Ramirez said, her voice dropping into a tone of lethal promise. "If you take one more step toward that little girl, I will have federal marshals arrest you for conspiracy and obstruction of justice before the sun sets today."
